Peter Gabriel fa un enorme regalo all’Italia, ma non solo: mette a disposizione di tutti le riprese del concerto di Verona di dieci anni fa, durante il ‘New Blood Tour’ e lo fa per raccogliere fondi per la Protezione civile e per la Croce Rossa Italiana, a sostegno della loro azione per l’emergenza coronavirus.

Da circa 50 anni amo l’Italia, la gente, la cultura, il cibo, la storia e, più recentemente, la Sardegna.
L’Italia ci ha offerto l’opportunità di lavorare quando nessun altro lo faceva, soprattutto ogni estate degli Anni Settanta, avevamo sempre da suonare e alcune delle esperienze di tour più caotiche e migliori sono state laddove si guidava da soli su e giù per il Paese per dare vita a un insieme di meravigliosi concerti che potevano essere in discoteche sulla spiaggia o in campi da calcio sulle montagne.
Sia con i Genesis, che con la mia musica, ho sempre trovato un pubblico meraviglioso e appassionato che cantava assieme a noi durante tutto il concerto e ogni qual volta ho fatto un album live, ho sempre chiesto come prima cosa se poteva essere fatto in Italia.
Parlo un po’ di italiano – molto male, ma abbastanza da sentirmi a casa. Ci colpisce molto come famiglia, vedere i report giornalieri delle morti e della devastazione che questo terribile virus sta portando.
Dieci anni fa, chiesi a mia figlia Anna di filmare lo show che avevamo pianificato con l’orchestra all’Arena di Verona, che resta un luogo straordinario nel quale potersi esibire. Nonostante stessi riprendendomi da un raffreddore e non sia riuscito a raggiungere le note che volevo, Anna fece un bellissimo lavoro assieme al suo collaboratore Andrew Gaston e un grandissimo team, riuscendo a catturare una serata davvero speciale.
Il film che ha fatto non è stato visto da un pubblico abbastanza grande come avrebbe di fatto meritato. Adesso, molti di noi sono a casa e isolati, così vogliamo rendere questi video disponibili per chiunque sia interessato sul canale Vimeo della Real World Records, con la sola richiesta di considerare di contribuire a una raccolta fondi a favore di una di queste organizzazioni, per combattere il virus: la Croce Rossa Italiana e la Protezione Civile.
Se preferite fare una donazione a qualche realtà più locale, per cortesia fatelo senza problemi. Stiamo pensando a tutti i nostri amici e fan e a chiunque sia stato colpito in qualche maniera da questo virus in Italia o in qualsiasi angolo del mondo. Siamo anche preoccupati poiché qua in UK vi stiamo seguendo a ruota.
Speriamo di vederci presto, non appena questo malefico genio sarà nuovamente nella bottiglia.

Un ‘regalo’, quindi, per tutti gli appassionati di Peter Gabriel che possono adesso vedersi il concerto all’Arena di Verona, dove il musicista inglese portò il tour del ‘New Blood Tour’, la versione orchestrale delle sue canzoni più famose, progetto che caratterizzò gli Anni Dieci del 2000. E una causa senz’altro buona, quella di raccogliere fondi per aiutare nell’emergenza determinata dal coronavirus, ma anche – e forse soprattutto – che dimostra il forte legame di Peter Gabriel con l’Italia, Paese che non gli ha mai voltato le spalle, fin dagli esordi della sua carriera.

For almost fifty years I have loved Italy, the people, the culture, the food, the history and more recently the island of Sardinia.
Italy offered us work when there was none, especially each summer in the 70s, gigs were always found and some of our best and most chaotic tour experiences were when we were driving ourselves all over the country for a hodge-bodge of brilliant gigs, from seaside discos to football pitches in the mountains.
Both Genesis and my music found wonderful and passionate audiences that used to sing along with us throughout the gigs and whenever I was doing a live album I would always ask first whether it could be arranged in Italy.
I speak some Italian – really badly, but enough for it to feel like our home from home. It really hit us hard as a family, to watch the daily reports of deaths and devastation that this brutal virus has brought.
Ten years ago, I asked my daughter Anna to film the show that we were planning to play with an orchestra at the Arena di Verona, which is an extraordinary place in which to be able to perform. Although I was recovering from a cold and not quite hitting the notes as I wanted, Anna did a wonderful job with her collaborator Andrew Gaston, and a great team, in capturing a very special night.
The films she made have not been seen by a wide enough audience. Now many of us are at home and isolated, so we wanted to make them available to anyone interested, on the Real World Vimeo channel with the sole request that you consider contributing to one of these organisations raising money to fight the virus: Croce Rossa Italiana – Italian Red Cross or the Protezione Civile. We are thinking of all our friends and fans and everybody who has been hit in one way or another by this virus in Italy and around the world. We are also worried we are not far behind you in the UK.
