The Band – The Last Waltz 40th Anniversary Edition

‘The Last Waltz’, un classico dei The Band, compie 40 anni e lo fa con una special edition in vinile, pubblicata dalla casa discografica Rhino.
Nel giorno del Ringraziamento del 1976, The Band salì sul palco per l’ultima volta al Winterland Theatre a San Francisco. Il concerto, non casualmente chiamato ‘The Last Waltz’ è divenuto una delle performance più mitizzate di tutti i tempi.
Per questo show, Rick Danko, Levon Helm, Garth Hudson, Richard Manuel e Robbie Robertson furono raggiunti sul palco da un gruppo di artisti ‘all-star’, tra cui spiccano Eric Clapton, Neil Diamond, Bob Dylan, Dr. John, Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison, Muddy Waters e Neil Young.
La serata venne filmata da Martin Scorsese, che contribuì alla mitizzazione di questo show, dato che tuttora viene considerato il miglior film di un concerto mai fatto.
La casa discografica Rhino ha deciso di celebrare questo importante anniversario con una pubblicazione in quattro versioni diverse, compresa l’accoppiata video e audio per la prima volta insieme.
E’ quindi disponibile in una versione 4 cd più il blu-ray, oppure in vinile (6 lp) e, in tutto, vi sono a disposizione degli appassionati ben 54 tracce: l’intero concerto di addio, ma anche dei brani registrati durante le prove e degli outtakes.
Tra le rarità che si trovano in questa edizione, vi sono le performance non incluse nel film, , come ‘Furry Sings the Blues’, cantata da Joni Mitchell e ‘All Our Past Times’ eseguita da Eric Clapton. E ancora, le prove di ‘Caravan’ con Van Morrison, ‘Such A Night’ con Dr. John e ‘King Harvest (Has Surely Come)’, canzone che, alla fine, non venne eseguita in concerto.
La versione in cd contiene anche delle note scritte dai giornalisti musicali David Fricke e Ben Fong-Torres, che si affiancano al testo che, a suo tempo, venne scritto da Emmett Grogan.
Infine, uscirà a dicembre anche un’ulteriore edizione, quella dedicata ai collezionisti, in sole 2500 copie in tutto il mondo, dove sono racchiuse anche la pubblicazione della sceneggiatura originale di Martin Scorsese: quando Scorsese terminò il lavoro sul film, si accorse che aveva due copie di questo script, raccolto in un libro dalla copertina di pelle rossa. Una se l’è tenuta ovviamente per sé e l’altra la regalò a Robbie Robertson e quest’ultima, adesso, si trova alla Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Nella Collector Edition ci sono anche due introduzioni, una di Martin Scorsese e una di Mardik Martin che collaborò con il regista per la realizzazione di questo film.
