La seconda canzone di ‘i/o‘ di Peter Gabriel che arriva è nella sua versione ‘dark-side remix’, nonostante esca con la luna piena: si tratta di ‘The Court’, brano che, fin dal primo ascolto, convince di più rispetto a Panopticom.
Il tema, così come ben si intuisce dal titolo, è la giustizia.
Gabriel, infatti, commenta di essere partito dal ritornello ‘The Court Will Rise’ e di aver costruito il testo attorno a questa frase.
Per l’artista inglese, infatti, «Gran parte della vita è una lotta tra ordine e caos – spiega – e, in un certo senso, la giustizia o il sistema legale è qualcosa che imponiamo per cercare di portare qualche elemento di ordine nel caos. Questo spesso è ingiusto, abusato e discriminatorio, eppure, con grande probabilità, resta una parte essenziale della società civile. Dobbiamo però anche pensare a come tutto questo venga effettivamente realizzato o impiegato».
Venendo al lato strettamente musicale, si tratta di un brano un po’ meno scontato di quello che lo ha preceduto ed ha aperto le danze sul nuovo album, ma è difficile dire che non siamo più nel campo del ‘già sentito’.
Qua, la produzione è tutta di Gabriel, che si avvale – come sempre – di Tony Levin al basso, David Rhodes alla chitarra e Manu Katché alla batteria. I cori, invece, sono affidati alla figlia Melanie, che già lo aveva accompagnato in diverse occasione, mentre l’orchestrazione è stata affidata a John Metcalfe, altro nome noto dell’entourage gabrielliano, avendo curato il progetto di ‘New Blood’.
Essendo la giustizia il tema del brano, anche l’associazione a cui in parte si ispira opera in questo ambito. Si tratta di ‘Namati‘, organizzazione che fornisce alle persone di tutto il mondo l’accesso alla giustizia, cosa che, altrimenti, non potrebbero permettersi.
Infine, per quanto concerne l’opera d’arte che illustra il brano e ne fa da cover è rappresentata dall’installazione ‘Lifting The Curse’, di Tim Shaw. Opera originariamente create per spezzare la maledizione lanciata alla Royal Academy e ai suoi membri dagli artisti Gilbert e George, alla fine si rivolge a un più ampio spettro di forze oscure, non ultima l’invasione russa nei confronti dell’Ucraina.
Gabriel, parlando di Tim Shaw, ha dichiarato di trovarlo un artisti il cui lavoro è potente, politico e sciamanico.
«Ha spesso affrontato temi difficili – dice Gabriel – quale la guerra e la tortura. E’ cresciuto a Belfast, quindi ha sperimentato la paura e la violenza attorno a sé, cosa che sono sicuro lo deve aver profondamente segnato».
‘The Court’ è anche il primo brano che – a otto mesi dall’inizio di questa avventura – ha un video vero e proprio a suo corredo.
