Quinto mese e quinta canzone che farà parte di ‘i/o‘, il prossimo album di Peter Gabriel, la cui tracklist si compone mese dopo mese, a ogni luna piena. Questa volta, l’artista inglese ci propone ‘Four Kinds of Horses‘, brano che parte da lontano. Anzi lontanissimo. Da alcuni accordi creati anni e anni or sono con Richard Russell, fondatore della XL Records, in occasione di una visita di Gabriel agli studi di registrazione dell’amico.
«In quel momento – ricorda Gabriel – abbiamo provato alcune cose, ma non funzionavano, quindi è rimasta lì per un bel po’, poi l’ho ripresa in mano, le ho cambiato il mood e il groove e ho visto che così funzionava e, quindi, ci ho lavorato fino al risultato di oggi».
Ne è nato un brano molto ‘gabriellano’, che sicuramente rappresenta una delle migliori finora ascoltate del nuovo album.
Per quanto riguarda il contenuto, lo stesso musicista ha dichiarato che c’erano varie cose su cui lavorare quando ha iniziato a scrivere il testo, tra cui la parabola buddista dei quattro tipi di cavallo, che descrive i diversi modi in cui uno studente può avvicinarsi alla pratica spirituale. Al tempo stesso ci si trova un focus sulla sovrapposizione di religione e pace da un lato e violenza e terrorismo dall’altro, così come ci sono parecchie suggestioni che provengono dal film ‘Paradise Now’ di Hany Abu-Assad, che parla di due giovani uomini addestrati per essere terroristi: «una vera e propria visione di dove possa andare la testa», dice Gabriel.
Anche in questo brano troviamo l’orchestrazione di John Metcalfe, che diventa fondamentale soprattutto per quanto riguarda il lavoro sugli archi, basilari per il suono dell’intero brano, mentre al backing vocal troviamo ancora la figlia Melanie.
L’immagine della cover è, invece, affidata a Cornelia Parker, artista che Gabriel definisce ‘affascinante’ e che fa un lavoro, secondo lui, straordinario e, parlando della scelta della cover afferma: «Mi sono innamorato di questo particolare lavoro che si chiama ‘Snap’».
